I like Twitter because it’s just plain fun. I also like it as a source of information. But, I don’t like the fact that I have to proactively go out to Twitter or Twitter Search to see the latest. Social networks may be more popular than email, but I still live by email. It’s remains my main avenue of online communication, and it’s also one of the key ways I store and track information and tasks.
So, rather than going out to follow a hashtag, I wanted the hashtag tweets to come to me–in email. I did a little exploring and found a way to make it happen. If you want to follow a hashtag (#) or just a topic in Twitter via email, follow these directions:
- In the right pane of Twitter (or on www.search.twitter.com), search for the hashtag and/or topic you want to follow. (See note below.)
- Check the search results to see if they are what you’re looking for. When you’ve got the right query results, click RSS feed for this query, in the right column.
- In the address bar, select and copy the URL for this feed, using copy/paste. Make sure you select the entire URL.
- Now, go to this nice little service, www.feedmyinbox.com.
- In the first box, Enter a website URL, paste the feed URL you copied. In the second box, Enter your email address, enter the address you want the tweets sent to.
- You’ll be sent a confirmation email and you’ll need to click the link in it.
That’s it. Now, you’ll start receiving the tweets for your topic in your email, where you can review them at your leisure. Feedmyinbox sends the results at least once a day, and more depending upon the volume of tweets.
Note: Twitter’s search is rich, offering lots of options like the ability to search by person or place or timeframe, search for this word AND this word, search for this word OR this word, and so on. This method will work with any feed, so you can use the search functionality to narrow down to the information you want from the people you want and get it fed to you via email.
